AM licence — Mopeds and scooters

The AM licence can be obtained from age 14 by passing a theory and practical test.

Vehicles you may ride with an AM licence

  • Two-wheeled mopeds with a top speed of 45 km/h and an engine size up to 50 cc or power up to 4 kW
  • Three-wheeled mopeds with the same limits
  • Light quadricycles with an unladen mass under 350 kg, top speed 45 km/h, and 50 cc or power under 6 kW

If you do not hold Italian citizenship, the theory test can be taken with audio support. Learners with specific needs (e.g. SLD) may use audio support with 10 extra minutes.

A1 licence — Light motorcycle

The A1 licence can be obtained from age 16 with a theory test (same as category B) and a practical test.

Vehicles you may ride with an A1 licence

  • Motorcycles up to 125 cc, up to 11 kW, with a power-to-weight ratio not exceeding 0.1 kW/kg
  • Tricycles up to 15 kW
  • Agricultural machines within motorcycle size limits
  • Vehicles allowed on an AM licence

A2 licence — Medium-power motorcycle

The A2 licence can be obtained from age 18 with a theory test (only if you hold no other driving licence) and a practical test.

Vehicles you may ride with an A2 licence

  • Motorcycles up to 35 kW with a power-to-weight ratio not exceeding 0.2 kW/kg
  • Motor tricycles up to 15 kW
  • Agricultural machines up to 40 km/h within motorcycle size and mass limits
  • Vehicles allowed on AM and A1 licences

A licence — Unlimited-power motorcycle

The A licence can be obtained at 20 if you have held A2 for at least 2 years, otherwise at 24, with a theory test (only if you hold no other licence) and a practical test.

Vehicles you may ride with an A licence

  • All motorcycles, with or without sidecar, with no power or capacity limit
  • Tricycles over 15 kW
  • Agricultural machines up to 40 km/h within motorcycle size and mass limits
  • Vehicles allowed on AM, A1 and A2 licences
